Summer is now in full swing. The rain has hopefully passed and we can now begin enjoying the Oklahoma summer nights we’ve all come to know and love. Nothing goes better with spending time with friends and family than doing it in a newly constructed outdoor living space. If you don’t have one, we have some great ideas for you to incorporate in your backyard so you can relax and drift away during those summer nights.
If you don’t have a patio to begin with, creating one can be done with a little hard work and creativity. You can construct a patio out of pavers, stone or a wooden deck. How you want to use your patio is the major determining factor as to what your patio should be built with. With pavers you can get creative with the color and layout and you can typically create an entire patio over the weekend. Of course, if you aren’t necessarily the handy-person type, you can always hire a professional to create your patio floor or deck.
With a patio in place, now we can focus on utilizing it. One of the easiest ways to spruce up your back patio is to construct a simple fire pit, or ring. There are many do-it-yourself websites available for you to use as a resource, but if you’re looking for the easiest way to sit fireside without all the sweat, you can purchase already assembled fire pits at your local lawn and garden store. Better yet, have one shipped directly to your house via Amazon. Taking your outdoor living area a step further, you could build a legit fireplace, chimney and all.
Since the sun is staying out longer, the likelihood of it staying warm throughout the evening is very high in Oklahoma. An awning may take away from the ascetics of your home, but adding a pergola to your patio adds a great look and feel to your outdoor space. It even increases the value of your home! With pergolas, you have your choice of wood and color. Of course there are advantages and disadvantages to the different types of wood, but if treated properly and installed correctly, maintenance and care is minimal. The unique look of pergolas is what makes them a very attractive add-on to your home.
Now that we have some shade, let’s talk entertainment. Adding an outdoor kitchen is on many people’s home improvement lists. By doing so, you immediately have a great way to entertain. When hosting parties, everyone gravitates toward the kitchen to see what’s on the menu anyways, so making that social gathering area outside makes sense on beautiful summer nights. Outdoor kitchens come in many shapes and sizes, so constructing that area to fit your outdoor space (and more importantly style) can be done with ease. Built in sinks and grills are what’s typically on an outdoor kitchen checklist, but if you wanted to really impress the neighborhood, you can always go with a brick-fired pizza oven in addition to the normal features. Like pergolas, building an outdoor kitchen area increases your home’s value and family and friends alike will enjoy the extension of your living room, now with the ability to create delicious meals.
Taking advantage of longer days is something we should all build in to our schedules. Updating and/or creating new spaces in and around your home are some things that can help with that. An outdoor living area can create new experiences and memories for you, your family and your friends. Take advantage! Get outside!
